Traveling with Probiotic Gummies - Do They Melt? TSA?
Hey all! I'm heading out on a 2-week trip with a long flight and some hiking in between. I want to bring my probiotic gummies but I'm worried they might melt in the heat or get confiscated at security. Any tips on packing them? Do they need to be in original bottles? How do you store them on the go?
Honestly, I never travel with those things. Real probiotics come from food like yogurt or kefir, not gummies. If you must, keep them in your carry-on. TSA doesn't care about gummies unless they look like a solid mass. Put them in a small zip-lock bag if you don't want to carry the big bottle. But they can melt if they get hot, so keep them in an insulated pouch or near your A/C vent on the plane.
I take my gummies everywhere! I use a small pill organizer with a tight seal. They get a little soft in the heat but usually firm back up. For hiking, I wrap them in a damp cloth inside a ziplock - the evaporative cooling helps. And for TSA, I've never had an issue as long as they're in my carry-on. Just declare them if asked, it's food, after all.
Pro tip: freeze them before you fly. They stay solid longer. But don't let them refreeze if they melt - that ruins the texture. For TSA, the 3-1-1 rule applies if they're a gel or liquid, but gummies are solid so no issue. I put them in a small glass jar with a tight lid to prevent crushing. And for hot climates, carry a tiny insulated lunch bag. Works like a charm.
